Pascal felt healthy. He had no symptoms. No warning signs. Yet in a matter of moments, everything shifted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">\u201cI was just going about my life, minding my own business,\u201d Pascal recalls. \u201cAnd then one phone call made me realize that it could all be over in an instant. That shakes you to your core.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4>An Unexpected Diagnosis<\/h4>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The MRI, initially intended to double-check intestinal health, captured Pascal\u2019s entire chest cavity. That broader scan detected a tumor on his kidney\u2014something no one had been looking for. Within days, he was referred to a urologist at Cedars-Sinai, who confirmed what Pascal feared most: there was a 95\u201399% chance the tumor was kidney cancer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Like many patients, Pascal\u2019s first thought was devastating.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">\u201cYou immediately think, this is it. Life is over,\u201d he says. \u201cEven if you know logically that it may not be a death sentence, that fear hits instantly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Surgery was scheduled for December 22, 2019. The tumor was removed, along with approximately 10% of his right kidney. The diagnosis was confirmed malignant\u2014but caught early enough that the cancer had not spread.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">\u201cI was unbelievably lucky,\u201d Pascal says. \u201cThe tissue around the tumor was still healthy. If we hadn\u2019t found it when we did, the outcome could have been very different.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4>The Importance of Early Detection<\/h4>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Pascal credits his survival to one simple fact: the cancer was discovered early\u2014by chance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">\u201cI avoided a major bullet, and the only reason is because we caught it early,\u201d he explains. \u201cThat\u2019s why preventative testing is so important. Even if you feel great. Especially if you feel great.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">He emphasizes that kidney cancer often shows no symptoms until it has progressed significantly. In many cases, fatigue or pain only appears once the tumor has grown or metastasized.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">\u201cI have a friend who lost an entire kidney because his tumor had grown to the size of the kidney itself,\u201d Pascal shares. \u201cThat didn\u2019t happen overnight. It took years. And it could have been avoided with earlier screening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Today, Pascal urges people\u2014particularly those over 50\u2014to prioritize regular checkups and imaging when possible.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">\u201cBy the time you have symptoms, it\u2019s often much more serious,\u201d he says. \u201cA simple scan can save your life.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4>Recovery, Resilience, and a New Perspective<\/h4>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Although Pascal anticipated a relatively quick recovery, complications from scar tissue related to a prior surgery made the operation more extensive than expected. His recovery stretched from weeks into months.<\/p>\n<h4>How Health Changed His Creative Outlook<\/h4>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">With over four decades in the entertainment industry, Pascal says his health journey has profoundly shaped the kind of projects he now wants to pursue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">\u201cI don\u2019t want to make mindless entertainment anymore,\u201d he explains. \u201cI want to be part of films that make people feel something\u2014laugh, cry, reflect. Life is too precious not to create work with meaning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Facing mortality gave him clarity\u2014not just about health, but about purpose.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">\u201cWhen you realize life can change in seconds, every moment matters,\u201d he says. \u201cEvery breath matters.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4>Why Speaking Out Matters<\/h4>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Pascal believes creatives and public figures have a responsibility to speak openly about kidney disease and early detection.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">\u201cPeople listen when stories are personal,\u201d he says. \u201cIf sharing what I went through gets even one person to schedule a checkup, then it\u2019s worth it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Today, Pascal wakes up each morning with gratitude.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think about it all the time\u2014how close I came, and how lucky I was,\u201d he says. \u201cThat awareness never leaves you.
