For career film colorist and post-production artist Allen Kelly, Thanksgiving 2025 will forever hold a meaning far deeper than turkey, tradition, or gratitude lists. It was the night that changed his life.<\/p>\n

After seven years of living with kidney failure and enduring dialysis, Allen received the call he had been waiting for \u2014 one that came unexpectedly at 11:30 p.m. on Thanksgiving night.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey said, \u2018This is so-and-so from the Connie Frank Kidney Center at UCLA. We have a kidney for you,\u2019\u201d Allen recalled. \u201cI froze. It didn\u2019t register at first that this was really happening.\u201d<\/p>\n

Moments later, reality set in. Allen shared the news with his family, and their quiet holiday evening instantly transformed into one filled with tears, hugs, and disbelief.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey were jumping up and down,\u201d he said. \u201cWe were hugging each other. And they told me, \u2018You need to come down as soon as possible.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Within minutes, Allen and his family were in the car, arriving at UCLA around 1:00 a.m. Doctors immediately began running tests, checking his creatinine, potassium, hemoglobin, and other levels to prepare him for surgery. Even then, the journey wasn\u2019t over yet.<\/p>\n

\u201cI actually had to go into dialysis again that night,\u201d Allen explained. \u201cMy potassium levels were too high, so I had dialysis for a couple of hours to bring them down.\u201d<\/p>\n

By 6:00 a.m., Allen was being prepped for surgery.<\/p>\n

\u201cShortly after that,\u201d he said simply, \u201cI came out with a new kidney.\u201d<\/p>\n

A Long Road to That Call<\/h4>\n

Allen\u2019s journey with kidney disease began in 2019, after what he thought was a routine blood test.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey looked at my creatinine levels and said, \u2018Your levels are creeping up. It looks like you\u2019re going into kidney failure,\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cThat was devastating.\u201d<\/p>\n

Doctors told him he needed to begin dialysis immediately \u2014 news that hit even harder because Allen had no idea what dialysis truly involved. Fortunately, his wife, a nurse, helped him understand what was coming.<\/p>\n

Still, nothing could fully prepare him for the reality.<\/p>\n

For seven years, Allen underwent dialysis three times a week, often starting at 3:15 in the morning.<\/p>\n

\u201cI went that early because there was room available,\u201d he said, \u201cand I thought maybe if I slept during dialysis, I\u2019d still be able to work.\u201d<\/p>\n

Allen\u2019s career had him working across films, television, commercials, trailers, and music videos. Known in the industry for his artistry, precision, and calm presence, he continued working as much as his body would allow \u2014 even when dialysis left him exhausted.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey would regularly take out two to three liters of fluid at a time,\u201d Allen said. \u201cThat, on top of the medications, really wiped me out.\u201d<\/p>\n

Yet he kept going \u2014 balancing work, medical appointments, strict dietary restrictions, and constant lab tests to protect his heart, organs, and overall health.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe Never Gave Up\u201d<\/h4>\n

Allen\u2019s longtime friend and collaborator, David Courtice, witnessed that perseverance firsthand.<\/p>\n

\u201cEven when he was worn out, Allen brought such a positive spirit into every moment,\u201d David said. \u201cHe\u2019s the warmest, sweetest guy \u2014 someone you want to have around.\u201d<\/p>\n

David remembers exactly how he learned about Allen\u2019s transplant.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a text in the middle of the night on Thanksgiving,\u201d he said. \u201cI woke up and thought, \u2018Oh my God \u2014 Allen\u2019s getting a kidney.\u2019 It was phenomenal.\u201d<\/p>\n

David shared that Allen had recently been working on public service announcements for MNITF, making the moment feel especially profound.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was literally working on PSAs for kidney awareness,\u201d David said, \u201cand then suddenly, he\u2019s the patient.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gratitude, Perspective, and the Gift of Life<\/h4>\n

Today, Allen is recovering well, and his doctors are thrilled with his progress.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re really happy with my lab values and how the kidney is functioning,\u201d he said. \u201cThe surgeon even told me the operation usually takes three to four hours \u2014 and mine took an hour and a half.\u201d<\/p>\n

But beyond the medical success, Allen speaks most passionately about gratitude \u2014 especially toward the donor and their family.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m eternally grateful,\u201d he said. \u201cThey didn\u2019t have to make that decision.\u201d<\/p>\n

That gratitude has reshaped how Allen views life.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve lived my life,\u201d he reflected. \u201cMy kids are grown. But I still feel like there\u2019s so much more I can do.\u201d<\/p>\n

He now dreams of traveling again \u2014 visiting friends in New Zealand and returning to Japan, where his mother is from.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat will mean even more to me now,\u201d he said, noting that his grandfather, who died at 54 from suspected kidney failure, never had access to treatments like dialysis or transplantation.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m 64 now,\u201d Allen added. \u201cI\u2019ve outlived my grandfather. And I wonder what the future still holds.\u201d<\/p>\n

A Message to Future Donors \u2014 and Patients<\/h4>\n

Allen understands that organ donation can be a difficult, emotional decision \u2014 but he hopes people see it for what it truly is.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey are lifesavers,\u201d he said. \u201cPeople can pass on the gift of life \u2014 vision, heart, lungs, liver, kidneys. It\u2019s something money can\u2019t buy.\u201d<\/p>\n

He also offers encouragement to those currently on dialysis or facing serious illness.<\/p>\n

\u201cI chose not to give up,\u201d Allen said. \u201cI followed my doctor\u2019s advice. I stayed on my meds. I watched what I ate. I exercised.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause you never know when you\u2019ll get the call,\u201d he added. \u201cYou have to be ready \u2014 physically and mentally.\u201d<\/p>\n

For Allen, that readiness made all the difference.<\/p>\n

Now, every Thanksgiving will serve as a reminder of what he calls his second chance at life \u2014 made possible by science, resilience, and the selfless gift of organ donation.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
